One week ago, the greatest footballer to ever stand on a pitch walked silently off the New York New Jersey Stadium turf with a silver medal around his neck and tears streaming down his face. No press conference. No farewell speech. Just Lionel Messi, 39 years old, leaving a World Cup final for the third and almost certainly last time in his career.

Argentina had lost 1-0 to Spain in extra time. Ferran Torres had scored the only goal in the 106th minute. And Messi, who had carried his country through eight matches and eight goals to reach this final, had been largely peripheral in the one match that mattered most.

The tears were real. The loss was painful. And yet his legacy had already been secured long before he took the field in New Jersey.

What He Did in 2026: Eight Goals, Four Assists, and a Record That Now Belongs to Someone Else

That goal extended his World Cup scoring streak to nine consecutive matches, the longest in tournament history, before Spain ended it in the final.

In the semi-final against England he turned creator, registering four assists in 2026 in total, and completing 52 take-ons across the tournament, more than any other player. He hauled Argentina over the line time and again as the holders repeatedly flirted with elimination. Then came the final, and for the first time in this entire tournament, he could not find a way through.

The Final: Argentina's Worst, Messi's Most Helpless

The 2026 World Cup final was a match Argentina, and Messi, will want to forget quickly. As the Guardian reported, Argentina became the first team in the near century-long history of the tournament to fail to register a single shot in regular time of a World Cup final. Even when handed an additional 30 minutes in extra time, they never truly threatened.

Messi, who had provided one of the great individual tournament performances across the previous seven matches, was neutralised by a Spain side that was, as the Guardian noted, "suffocating defensively." Enzo Fernandez was sent off in stoppage time, reducing Argentina to ten men for extra time. Ferran Torres scored the winner in the 106th minute.

Messi described the pain of the defeat as "immense, and it will take time for this wound to heal." He said little else publicly. His international future remained unsaid.

A Career That Almost Ended Before It Truly Began

To understand what Messi's legacy actually means, you have to understand how close it came to being defined by failure rather than greatness.

He failed to score at the 2010 World Cup. He lost the 2014 World Cup final to Germany in extra time. He lost the 2015 Copa America final to Chile. He lost the 2016 Copa America final to Chile again, and that defeat prompted him to announce his international retirement at 28. "We need to fix many things in Argentinian football," he said when reversing the decision less than two months later, "but I prefer to do this from inside and not criticise from outside."

That reversal changed everything. Lionel Scaloni, initially appointed as caretaker after Argentina's 2018 World Cup exit in the last 16, built a team around Messi that went on a 36-game unbeaten run. They ended Argentina's 28-year wait for a major trophy at the 2021 Copa America, defeating fierce rivals Brazil in the final. Messi played a part in 75 percent of his team's goals at that tournament at the age of 34.

They carried that momentum into the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and lifted the trophy for the first time in 36 years. Messi racked up 10 goal involvements and scored twice in the final. As Scaloni himself put it: "Football is about heart, gut instinct and never giving up." Argentina retained the Copa America in 2024 before arriving in North America to defend their World Cup title.

Messi himself had repeatedly thrown his 2026 participation into doubt amid concerns about his physical durability. As recently as March, Scaloni had admitted the Inter Miami star was still undecided on his participation after a series of niggling injuries. He showed up anyway. He always does.

The Records That Will Outlast Every Debate

Fox Sports compiled his complete career record after the final, and the numbers across 34 matches and six tournaments are staggering.

Twenty-one career World Cup goals, second only to Mbappe's 22. Twelve career assists, the most on record since 1966. Thirty-three total goal contributions, the most of any player in World Cup history. Twenty-three matches won, the most ever. Three thousand and fifty-four minutes played, the most ever. He scored in nine consecutive World Cup matches, the longest streak in tournament history. He registered an assist in six different World Cups, the only player ever to do so. He is only the second man to play in three World Cup finals, joining Brazil's Cafu.

He scored or assisted in 21 different World Cup matches, the most on record. He has scored against 15 different opponents at the World Cup, more than any player in history. He holds the record for most knockout stage matches played (17), most knockout stage assists (10), and most knockout stage goal contributions (17).

These are not just records. They are a body of work across two decades that no player in the history of the sport has produced at a World Cup.

What the Tears Actually Meant

Scaloni, who tearfully acknowledged after the final that it would be "complicated" to continue in his role, said of his captain: "He's 39 years old, it's unbelievable. It was crystal clear he was going to play until he decided not to. All of our people support him and I hope everyone is proud of what he's achieved because he's the best player to ever stand on a pitch."

The Guardian put it well: this defeat does nothing to sully a spotless legacy. A win would have only strengthened his claim as the greatest player in the history of the sport. The loss changes nothing fundamental about who Messi is or what he has done.

The tears at the final whistle were the tears of a competitor who wanted one more win, not the tears of a man whose story had ended badly. His story had already ended as well as any footballer's story has ever ended, with a World Cup title, three Copa America titles, and a bond with his country that once nearly did not exist at all.

He said it best himself in the build-up to this tournament: "I already completed the game at the last World Cup in Qatar." The 2026 campaign was a bonus. Eight more goals. One more final. And tears at the end of a story that was already the greatest ever told in football.
